With Surgeon General In Town, Students Skeptical Of Anti-Smoking Campaign

BOSTON (CBS) - Graphic anti-smoking ads are the government's latest effort to convince people to quit.

US Surgeon General Regina Benjamin appeared at the Massachusetts State House Wednesday to tout the ad campaign to an audience of supportive teenagers.

But there are many who believe the campaign is not having very much impact on one of the groups most at-risk for tobacco addiction -- young adults.

At Boston University, where a recent move to ban outdoor on-campus smoking fizzled, several students told WBZ-TV's Jon Keller they are skeptical about the ads' effectiveness.

One student smoker suggested that pressure on people's wallets, specifically Governor Patrick's push to boost the cigarette tax by $0.50 a pack may be a more effective measure when it comes to quitting.
