Menino: NStar Gives Money To Outage Victims

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino says the electric utility NStar's charitable foundation has donated $10,000 to help low and fixed income people who lost food during a power outage last week.

Menino said Monday that some people who lost food during the March 13 outage can't afford to shop more than a couple times monthly, and that the outage hit them hard.

He said he was pleased with the donation, and that the money will be immediately distributed.

About 21,000 customers lost power after a March 13 electrical transformer fire in the city's Back Bay section.

NStar chief executive Tom May has said the fire started after a rare "catastrophic" connector failure between the substation that houses the transformer and the transmission system.
