So, it was no surprise a few hundred people braved the chill to be first in line at the Apple store on Boylston Street Friday.

The new model starts at $499 and comes with a faster processor, a sharper screen and an improved camera.

Just after 8 a.m., Apple workers streamed down the circular staircase, flung the doors open and greeted anxious shoppers for the latest "gadget event."

Tristan was first line at 10:30 Thursday night.

Why?

"It's new," he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

"I've had the original iPad for ages and I loved it and I didn't get the iPad2 because it didn't seem like a huge upgrade, but with the big screen on this, it just seemed like the time."

Akil says this is more than just picking up a new computer.

"You want to get the thing before everybody else gets it. That's the whole spirit of being an Apple fan," he told WBZ.

"It's not geeky. It's like chic geek. It's like a cool geek."

Sales are limited to two per customer Friday.
