Defense Alleges Star Witness Was Shooter In Mattapan Massacre

BOSTON (CBS) - In closing arguments Tuesday, defense attorneys accused the prosecution's star witness of the four murders in Mattapan in 2010.

The attorneys for defendants Edward Washington and Dwayne Moore both told the jury that the prosecution's star witness, Kimani Washington, is the real killer in this case.

Edward Washington (Kimani's cousin) and Moore are accused of robbing and killing Ayana Flonory, her 2-year-old son Amani Smith, Levaughn Washum-Garrison and Simba Martin. Kimani Washington testified earlier in the trial that he drove a stolen SUV from the scene, but left before the murders happened.

Attorney John Amabile, who represents Moore, called it a grotesque perversion of justice that Kimani can avoid justice by making a deal with prosecutors to get a lesser prison sentence.

"The government has tried to sell you a complete, and utter falsehood," said Amabile. "Does he have a motive? Are you kidding me? He sold this 'cock and bull story' to the DA's office and he is going to be getting out of the can."

The defense argued that the case is weak and built on little hard evidence.

"It became very easy for a human being to buy into this hogwash narrative put forth by Kimani Washington," said Amabile.

Attorney John Cunha, who represents Edward Washington, echoed Amabile's message, saying that the DA's office made a deal with the devil and that Kimani has gotten away with murder.

The jury is expected to get the case by Wednesday.
