Elderly Man Dies After Being Pulled From Pool At YMCA In Newton
NEWTON (CBS) - An elderly man died Monday shortly after crews had apparently saved him from drowning in a pool at the West Suburban YMCA on Church Street in Newton.
The 82-year-old man, whose name was not released, was underwater for less than a minute when they pulled him out late this morning.
"The man was actually out of the pool, they performed CPR, they hooked up the defibrillator, and it said 'No shock advised,' and they brought the victim back by doing CPR," said Dep. Fire Chief Jim Thorne, whose station is just across the street from the Y.
But Newton Police told WBZ-TV Monday afternoon that the man passed away a short time later.
"Our YMCA family is this afternoon mourning the loss of a long time member and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," YMCA spokesperson Lisa LaVallee said, in a statement.
