Henry Apologizes To Carl Crawford

FORT MYERS, Fla (CBS) – Back in October, Red Sox owner John Henry told 98.5 The Sports Hub he opposed the Carl Crawford signing.

On Saturday, he apologized to his left-fielder.

Henry and Crawford met for about 10 minutes Saturday afternoon during the team's first full squad workout. Henry told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche he apologized, and Crawford accepted.

Earlier in the day, Henry told the media he regretted making the comments this fall.

"I should have never made those comments. It was an off-the-cuff remark that I shouldn't have made, so when I see him I'm going to apologize to him for it," Henry told reporters Saturday morning.

Crawford said it was an easy apology to accept.

"He handled it really well and made it really easy for me," said Crawford. "It wasn't nothing I had to get off my chest. It wasn't like I hated the guy or nothing like that. It was just like 'I accept your apology, let's move on. I have no hard feelings for you or anybody else around here.' I think we both share the same goal which is to help the Red Sox win. We'll be better off. We'll become stronger and the bond will be closer from his saying that. That's the way I look at it."

Henry took over the Felger and Mazz broadcast for nearly two hours in the weeks following the Red Sox September collapse. When asked whether the signing of Crawford was more of a public relations move or a baseball move, Henry said it was a baseball move, but one he was against.

"Anyone involved in the process, anybody involved in upper management with the Red Sox would tell you that I personally opposed that," Henry told Felger and Mazz. "Why? Because we had plenty of left-handed hitting. I don't have to go into why. I'll just tell you that at the time, I opposed the deal."

Crawford spoke about Henry's comments earlier in the week when he arrived at the Red Sox Spring Training facilities.

"I wasn't happy about it, and a little surprised," he said. "It's unfortunate he feels that way."

The Red Sox signed Crawford to a seven-year, $142-million contract last winter.
