Hingham Police: Texting Driver Crashes 2012 Jeep Into A Tree

HINGHAM (CBS) - A driver who slammed her car into a tree Saturday morning in Hingham has been cited for texting while driving.

Police say the 28-year-old Cohasset woman swerved off of Main Street as she looked down at her phone to read a text message.

The woman, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to South Shore Hospital and released. Police say she suffered only minor injuries.

Her 2012 Jeep Wrangler sustained heavy damage from the crash and appeared totaled.

On top of the texting fine, the woman was also cited for a marked lane violation.

A first offense under the state's texting law is a $100 fine.

The texting law (Chapter 90 Section 13B) includes "composing, sending or reading electronic messages." The first offense is a $100 fine, second a $250 fine and third or subsequent offense a $500 fine. Under the law, violations are not considered surchargeable offenses.
