Christy Mihos Under Investigation For Allegedly Assaulting Wife

BOSTON (CBS) - Former candidate for governor and millionaire businessman Christy Mihos is under investigation in Florida for allegedly assaulting his wife, Andrea.

Authorities in Martin County tell the I-Team's Kathy Curran that they received a report of the alleged assault on February 22, and will only confirm they are investigating. Mihos and his wife have been married for 38 years. In addition to their home on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, the two have shared a seaside condo in Stuart, Florida.

Sources say the argument ensued over illegal sexual encounters.

Investigators will not detail the nature of the assault, and so far no charges have been filed. Mihos, who once owned the Christy's chain of convenience stores, has made two runs for Governor of Massachusetts. He first campaigned in 2006 running as an independent. He captured only seven percent of the vote. He ran again as a Republican in 2010 and lost the primary.

As the former head of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority he also earned a reputation as a maverick with a quirky style.

Police have taken away Mihos' gun and permit. Andrea Mihos also told Yarmouth Police that her husband assaulted her last July.
