Cape Dolphin Strandings Largest Ever In Region

WELLFLEET (CBS) - Animal rescue crews are now dealing with the largest mass stranding on record for the northeastern part of the U.S.

Crews have discovered 177 dolphins stranded on Cape Cod since mid-January.

Of those, 106 were found dead, 71 were found alive, and 53 of those found alive were able to be released into the ocean.

At the same time, according to the Cape Cod Times, one of the biggest sources for funding marine mammal rescues may be going away.

The Prescott Grant Program from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) may be cut in the new federal budget and would be replaced by a network of private donations, the paper reports.
