Democratic Officials Call For Investigation Into Sheriff Frank Cousins

BOSTON (CBS) - There is a call for action after the I-Team investigated Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins.

The I-Team exposed questionable campaign fundraising by Cousins, including pressuring employees to donate.

Now, John Walsh, the Chairman of the Democratic Party is weighing in.

Walsh released the following statement Tuesday:

"The allegations that Republican Sheriff Frank Cousins has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation to pressure his employees to contribute to his campaign committee are serious and disturbing. At a time when many Massachusetts families are still struggling, the notion that an elected law enforcement official would force rank and file employees to fork over their hard-earned dollars to his campaign shocks the conscience.

"While this alleged corruption was unearthed by the media, there must now be a thorough investigation and those who have broken the law must face consequences. The only way to restore the people of Massachusetts' faith in their elected leaders is to root out corruption wherever it is found, regardless of political party or influence."

Sheriff Cousins, who is a Republican, calls the allegations "anonymous personal attacks" by disgruntled employees. He claims no one was ever pressured to contribute to his campaign.
