BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox’ offseason quest to add arms to their starting rotation took a big hit on Thursday, as right-hander Edwin Jackson signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals.

Jackson, 28, was reportedly on the Red Sox’ radar this winter.

Jackson is coming off a 12-9 season split between the White Sox and Cardinals. He posted a 3.79 ERA overall in 199.2 innings pitched. He made four postseason starts for St. Louis, going 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA.

In his career with the Dodgers, Rays, Tigers, White Sox, Diamondbacks and Cardinals, he owns a career record of 60-60 with a 4.46 ERA.

To change the subject, what about the Red Sox picking up Brandon Webb for “short money”? He has had arm trouble but was a 22 game winner in 2008.
