Padilla Stuck In Nicaragua For Failing To Pay Child Support For 10th Kid
BOSTON (CBS) – New Red Sox pitcher Vicente Padilla is facing arrest in his native Nicaragua for failing to pay child support for his tenth kid.
According to the Nicaragua Dispatch, a capture order has been issued for Padilla's arrest. Padilla failed to appear for a second court hearing to face allegations that he has neglected to pay $540 per month in child support for his 3-year-old.
Authorities clipped Padilla's passport, and he cannot leave the country until he clears up his legal issues.
Padilla signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in January that would pay him $1.5 million if he made the major league roster. The deal includes an invite to spring training, if he can make it.
Padilla is competing with Daniel Bard, Alfredo Aceves and Aaron Cook, among others, for the final two spots in the Red Sox starting rotation behind Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz.
The 34-year-old Padilla worked out of the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen last season, making nine appearances and allowing four runs over 8.2 innings.
He started for most of his 13-year career, going 104-90 with a 4.31 ERA in 237 starts.
According to Baseball Reference, Padilla has earned more than $50 million in his career.
