Keller @ Large: Donald Trump To The Rescue

BOSTON (CBS) - After all the debates and speeches, are you still dissatisfied with the leadership choices this presidential campaign is offering?

Don't despair – Donald Trump is there, stuffed into an arm chair at his palatial Palm Beach mansion with a roaring fire going in 78-degree weather, telling Bob Schieffer on "Face the Nation" yesterday that running for president is "not something I want to do."

After all, noted Trump, "I love my business. I love what I'm doing. I love this whole thing of what Donald Trump does."

But if he doesn't judge it likely that the GOP nominee who emerges will beat President Obama next fall, Trump says for the good of the nation, he might set aside his commitment to his wretched TV show "The Apprentice," and bring what Donald Trump does to bear on the presidential race, for better or worse.

As the humor writer Dave Barry put it after watching the interview: "What a courageous patriot. The man is willing to maybe give up his TV show to run… Just like Abraham Lincoln gave up his TV show… Thank you Donald Trump. America thanks you."

But even as we thank Mr. Trump profusely, some of us remain skeptical.

Could it be that just as Trump abandoned his earlier flirtation with running, which never actually involved doing any of the work a legitimate candidate would do, this latest round of self-puffery is also nothing more than a publicity stunt?

After all, his latest book, "Time to Get Tough," could use a little boost – barely seven weeks after publication, it sits at number 12,459 on the Amazon bestsellers list.

Perhaps that's why he's been on Twitter with a barrage of unoriginal criticisms of the president under the hashtag #Timetogettough.

What a happy marketing coincidence!

One thing unites the serious candidates for president – they are out there working hard, subjecting themselves to the ordeal of the campaign and risking their prestige.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump sits on his fat wallet, promoting his product line under the pretense of civic involvement.

Dave Barry is right – make room next to Lincoln on Mt. Rushmore.
