Fall River Bans Scrap Metal Sales Of Government-Issued Materials

FALL RIVER (CBS) – A new measure is in effect in Fall River that tightens up the requirements for buying and selling scrap metal.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

The ordinance bans Fall River dealers from accepting manhole covers, guard rails and other government-issued materials.

Dealers also have to provide daily activity logs to police.

The city is trying to cut down on the widespread theft of copper piping and other semi-precious metals.

Fall River Metals owner Michael Reynolds believes the ordinance is unnecessary.

“Even if I e-mail the day’s transactions to them, they’re going to catch thieves, maybe. The point being, it’s not going to help the homeowner any, because they are still catching them after they rob the person’s house. So, it just adds more paperwork and more time for me,” said Reynolds.
