Jogger Assaulted Near Newton City Hall

NEWTON (CBS) – A jogger says she was assaulted near Newton City Hall early Tuesday morning.

The 31-year-old Brighton woman told reporters she was running along the Commonwealth Avenue path at Walnut Street around 5:15 a.m., when a man moved towards her.

"He lunged at me.  I lost footing and I fell backwards and he was just over me.  He just kept telling me to 'shush and shush.'  And I just kept screaming and then he ran off," she said.

The man was last seen running towards Bullough Park.

The woman waived down a person who called police.

Officers searched the area but didn't find the attacker.

He's described as black, six-feet tall, wearing a black jacket and a baseball hat with a star on it.

The woman said she saw a dark colored coupe drive by her three times before the attack. At this point in the investigation, it's not clear if that car was involved, police said.

WBZ-TV's Ken MacLeod reports

The area is very popular with runners, especially those training for the Boston Marathon, because that stretch of Commonwealth Avenue is part of the course heading towards Heartbreak Hill.

The woman said she's trained for several marathons and has run in the area often with no problems before Tuesday's incident.
