Mark Wahlberg Says He Would Have Fought 9/11 Hijackers On Flight

BOSTON (CBS) - On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.

What happened that day altered the events of world history forever. But, if Mark Wahlberg were on one of the hijacked planes, "it wouldn't have went down like it did."

Wahlberg, who is starring in the new film "Contraband," told Men's Journal that he would have fought the hijackers if he was on one of the doomed planes.

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports

"There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry,'" Wahlberg told the magazine for its February issue.

Wahlberg told Time Magazine in 2007 that he was originally scheduled to be on a morning flight out of Boston on 9/11, but instead took a plane to Toronto a week earlier.

Wahlberg released a statement Wednesday, apologizing to anyone he offended:

"To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with, and to suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention."
