SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – A man was arrested for his seventh drunk driving offense in Springfield on Wednesday morning.
John Maher, 54, faces several charges including drunk driving and reckless driving.
According to police, Maher nearly struck a police cruiser while passing by it at around 1:20 a.m. The trooper said Maher was traveling at least 85 miles per hour.
The trooper pulled Maher over and observed he appeared to have been drinking. Before placing Maher under arrest, the trooper said he needed to hold up the driver several times outside the truck because he could not keep his balance.
According to driving records, Maher’s license was suspended for eight years back in 2006 after his sixth OUI conviction.
Maher was held on $20,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned in Chicopee District Court later Wednesday morning.
