Cannons Announce 2012 Schedule, Will Host MLL Championship Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) -  The 2011 Major League Lacrosse champion Boston Cannons will get to defend their crown on home turf next season.

The Cannons announced their 2012 schedule on Wednesday, beginning Saturday, April 28 and culminating with the MLL Championship Weekend on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26 at Harvard Stadium.

"Following our first championship win, we couldn't be happier to host the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend, giving us the opportunity to repeat in front of our home crowd, the best fans in Major League Lacrosse," Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney said in a release. "With two new teams in the league, it's only going to get tougher to make the post-season, so every regular season game will be a battle and a great show for our fans."

Four of the league's eight teams will qualify, with two semi-final games played Saturday and the Championship Game taking place Sunday. All three games are included in Cannons season ticket packages.

But before they can get to the playoffs, the Cannons will have to do their damage in the regular season.

Boston will open their season at home on April 28 against the Rochester Rattlers, a game that will feature a pre-game Championship celebration ceremony. Their first three games will be played at home, with three of their final four at Harvard Stadium as well.

The schedule also features a Thursday evening home game on July 19 against the Denver Outlaws.

"As always, we will create events to involve the greater Boston community in Cannons games, bringing new and fun experiences for our fans," continued Barney. "We also added a Thursday night game to the schedule this year to draw Boston's young professionals for an affordable, after-work event."

The Cannons won their first MLL Championship last season with a 10-9 win over the Hamilton Nationals.
