BOSTON (CBS) – So what caused an eight-mile backup on Route 128 north of Boston Wednesday morning?

Check: Traffic Updates

The Department of Transportation said it was a mistake and you can blame them.

Someone closed the left travel lane on the southbound side of the highway for work crews – even though no work was being done.

That brought a flood of complaints from drivers.

“We had no work scheduled on the left lane on that stretch of 128 today. That’s where the mishap came in,” Mass DOT spokesman Mike Verseckes told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

“The crew may have been deployed erroneously or without properly coordinating schedules.”

“We try not to be an obstruction to traffic flowing through, so we’ll figure out where things went wrong and figure out how to fix it.”

  3. TJG says:

Massachusetts is run by a bunch of idiots, wait till the tunnels of the Big Dig collapse…as everyone knows they will…the cost will be staggering. I would advise the rest of the country to fight tooth and nail against providing any more money to fix the avoidable tragedy when it happens.

  4. Dave Johanssen says:

How many man-hours were lost because of this “mishap”? Maybe someone should be fired….yeah-right – like someone in government would EVER take responsibility for their ineptness.

  5. Yabecoo says:

Maybe if the workers who blocked the highway were allowed to do the repair work instead of some asinine union rule that prevented it, it never would have happened. Anything to pad the payroll and increase the union coffers for the Demorats re election.

  6. Sabrina Evans says:

feel sorry for the people who got stuck in that! Hope my nephew wasnt in it

  7. walter12 says:

In Leftist Mass, what else would one expect? Are they not union employees who voted for this monster Obama? Are they not following his lead, in that he is their master.

A government agency screws-up & thiousands suffer–another reason why osamacare needs to go! At least no one died!

  9. GMAN51 says:

Probably another million dollar stimulus money spent on this shovel-ready project.

  10. gegsr1 says:

    shovel ready wasn’t shovel ready!

  11. Spanky says:

This can’t be true. Everyone knows that only businesses make mistakes.

Everything the government does is perfect.

That’s why we should take control of important industries away from the private sector and let the federal government run them.

  12. J.V. says:

Just another example of a government – union employee who has shown his/her ability to screw up our lives. Why not just pay them to stay home 24/7/365 and save us from their individual & collective incompetence rather than allowing them in the work force . . .as we do with the insane?

  13. Dennis Sinclair says:

They couldn’t find the shovel – so they all went for coffee.

  14. djw663 says:

I’m sure it had to do with money LEFT in their budget that they had not paid out to union employees yet. GOD forbid they have any money in the bank at the end of the year.

    1. Spanky says:

All money should be given to union employees immediately, regardless of whether or not they earned it!

  15. John Malverne says:

During the government shutdown of 1994, the NY DOT used the billboards to shut down all of the main arteries on Long Island except for two 3-lane roads. Not coincidentally, these roads went past federal office building, where the cops had arranged barricades to accomodate federal employees who decided to protest literally on the highway.

The result was a four hour traffic jam at rush hour as every single Long Islander was forced to drive past the federal union employees. The message was clear: Taxpayers work for the government, not the other way around — and lest we forget it, they are capable of punishing us mercilessly.

    1. KellyinBoston says:

Hmm. I lived in Huntington (n Long Island) in 11994 during the governmental shutdown, and I worked in NYC. I don’t recall this event at all.

  16. Mike Alright says:

    The government is so efficient.

  17. Sonny Crockett says:

Government, unions and liberals = the demise of a once great nation.

  18. David says:

So, what did the crew that was deployed do while they were there? $$$$$$$

  19. Vote Loud says:

And we are to trust ObamaCare?

  20. Name says:

This happens in California all the time. Bureaucrats and police love to close roads and freeways. It’s annoying.

  21. response says:

“Someone closed the left travel lane on the southbound side of the highway for work crews” – This has to be more than just a “someone”…to close a lane on the highway, I’m assuming at least one cruiser is involved? People putting up road cones? A manager on site?
Then on the flip side, to open the highway, you need the same people to do the reverse.
What a waste of time and money for all! Great job MA DOT…You must have money to burn….
