Wegmans To Build New Store In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) - Wegmans has announced plans to open a new store across the from The Mall at Chestnut Hill on Route 9 in Newton.

The plans call for a smaller store of about 70,000 square feet on Boylston Street. The other Wegmans location in Northboro is the biggest supermarket in the state at 138,000 square feet.

"Though smaller in size, this store will have almost everything customers have come to expect from Wegmans, including a Market Café," said Bill Congdon, vice president and New England division manager.

The new Wegmans in Newton could potentially create 500 full- and part-time jobs. It will be apart of a new development dubbed Chestnut Hill Square, which will also feature fashionable specialty shops, restaurants, the Equinox fitness club, medical offices and luxury residences.

Design plans for the new store are still being worked on, and no opening date has been determined.
