PEABODY (CBS) - A Peabody police officer was hit by a pickup truck on Route 1 and seriously hurt during rush hour Monday morning.

Check: Traffic Updates

It happened in the southbound lanes near the Lowell Street exit around 9 a.m.

Sergeant Eric Zawacki was on a paid detail at a construction site giving directions to another driver when he was struck. The driver of the pickup stopped and was cooperating with police.

Zawacki was conscious and alert when he was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

It's not known yet if charges will be filed or citations will be issued to the driver.

Police say, "it appears to be a very unfortunate accident at this time."

Traffic in the area was backed up for miles because only one lane was open for the investigation.
