Police Stop ‘Occupy Boston’ From Moving In Winterized Tent

BOSTON (CBS) – Occupy Boston protesters brought a huge winterized tent to the edge of Dewey Square early Monday afternoon, but were blocked by police.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Bernice Corpuz reports

Occupiers were left standing outside their camp with the military-style, 500-pound tent, which was tightly wrapped up in plastic and wheeled in on a cart.

The peaceful standoff began at noon as expected.

City officials handed out fliers to the occupiers saying the tents violate fire safety and building codes.  New building materials are prohibited and the protesters would need to apply for a permit.

The standoff ended about a half-hour later as the protesters retreated.

The tent was loaded onto a truck at about 12:45 p.m.

Police commissioner Ed Davis was at the scene with several officers.

There were no incidents.

“It’s only a temporary site. By bringing a tent of this magnitude, it makes it more of a permanent site. I just don’t think it’s what we’re going to allow on that piece of property in Dewey Square,” Mayor Tom Menino told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Monday morning.

The fireproof tent has room for more than ten people and protesters say it meets all codes required by the city.

The group bought it for more than $1,300 with the help of seven donors.

It’s time to boot these losers out of Boston. Their 15 minutes of fame are up.

    1. Realist says:

Cynic is on the money. We don’t need our green spaces littered with camping gear and trash by these people who “think” they have the right to move into a public park. Let them go to a campground if they are so determined to camp.

    2. Oleg says:

I agree with you 200% get them out of there Los Angelis did it so can Boston

  2. Justin says:

It is PATHETIC the double standard that exists in this city. Menino is a scumbag that would rather regulate, penalize, and punish the good guys while letting those who wish to cause harm, act criminally, or push the envelope of decency get a free pass.

  3. Why the hypocrisy? says:

I’m curious….. the Pres just announced a 17 day Hawaiian vacation with the family…….. another lengthy vacation……. how come Occupy isn’t protesting them? Can the “99%” afford such lengthy, frequent vacations? I sure as heck can’t! Why aren’t they camped out in front of Tom Brady Buncheoon’s new mega-mansion that is being built? Or is it ok for sports “Heroes” to be rich? Why aren’t they camped outside of the Kardashian homes, protesting their disgusting display of wealth (heeelllooooo – Kim’s wedding??) Gee, must only be the “corporate rich” that are evil, politicians sports stars and hollywood fools are the “acceptable rich” apparently

  4. LLoyd Bridges says:

Occupy Boston has stolen more than $800,000 from the Boston City Budget so far and no one seems to be that upset. Will the citizens react when a school or fire station has to close due to lack of funds in the city budget? This Army of Occupation isn’t interested in protesting banks, they are however interested in disrupting the normal activities of the city. Their last protest was over a sink, this time a tent. Think about it.

It’s interesting that the drivel on your link is mostly related to Europe. Back into your sleeping bag to continue your mental wanking.

    2. Realist says:

      Mr. Frey:

We know about the things they do. What is it exactly you think your protest accomplishes. The lady with the BOA fee petition campaign has been way more effective than anything “occupy” has accomplished other than litter and turn parks into quagmires of filth.

      Evening Jerry,

You’ll have to get off the ‘mothers milk’, sorry.

This is how we got to wear we are today:

After WW II, the US via the Marshall Plan, financed & rebuilt Europe….In doing so America placed a protective umbrella, through NATO, over those countries…

Consequently those countries ‘didn’t’ have to invest in standing armies to protect themselves. They were able to direct those defense funds to things like ‘socialized medicine’, free college tuition, 4-6 weeks vacation in certain industries & a ‘Litany’ of other hand outs….

Creating a ‘gimmiecrat, entitled’ mindset, like yours/

Meanwhile back home, since the mid-sixties & the advent of Lyndon’s ‘Great Society’, which was unfunded, consequently, the US has had to raise it’s debt limit 70+ times to pay for it….

It’s over, the $$’s ‘ALL GONE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD’, deal with it!….

All financed, as an unintended consequence by the USA’s borrowing $$!

‘I find it interesting that China & India are now owning & kicking our butt’s….51 babies are born every minute in India, probably a lot more in China. Do you think they’ll build ‘welfare states’ or build their economy’s?…….Could their success be because we ‘didn’t’ help them?……..’YUP’……They helped themselves!

      & so it goes.

      gramps……PS

Our ‘Great & now failing Society’ was & is being funded by ‘CHINA’ & staffed by INDIA……Chicken fingers & Curry, anyone?

    5. Tsal says:

Jerry. It’s not worth the effort here. You’ll notice that there are endless complaints about a group occupying a small piece of land in Boston and none about the corruption in Washington. And even more amazing are those that think we are not right behind Europe. Good try though

My neighbors and I don’t like our apartments anymore–we now prefer a more oceanfront, Back Bay view–so we’re going to pitch some tents on the Esplanade overlooking the Charles River tomorrow. That’s OK to do, right? Here come your new downtown neighbors, Boston! :)

    1. Sage says:

If you visit the Occupy location, then you will see that it is truly a site of protest and ongoing dialogue. It is not a permanent site, either. It is a months-long program of political activity and discussion for the betterment of our country and our democracy. It’s not fun and games, although some fun is had there and some good music (mostly political) is played there.

  7. curious says:

I’m curious….. the pres just announced a 17 day hawaiian vacation with the family, for “r & r”. Why aren’t they protesting them? How many of the 99% can afford multiple vacations in one year, nevermind 17 DAY VACATIONS ???

  8. Sage says:

The tent was donated by a homeless man named Lenny, who raised the money on his own initiative, to provide shelter for homeless people. I stay at Occupy Boston to protest and hold dialogue on the status of our government and our society. It is tenmporary. It is not permanent. It is a worthy endeavour, probably one of the most worthy endeavours in our country today as relates to governance.

    1. tsal says:

Sage – good for you and thank you for taking the time to speak out about the corruption that is destroying our country.

  9. sloopjohnB2 says:

The Mayor out to move into one of the tents. He can then be with “his” people. These layabouts and lowlife should have been removed a long time ago.
