Report: Valentine Gets 2-Year Deal From Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) - Bobby Valentine's contract with the Boston Red Sox is for only two years, 98.5 The Sports Hub's national baseball insider Jon Heyman is reporting.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Valentine will be introduced as Boston's new manager Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park, but a two-year deal already brings to question how long he will be around.

With only a two-year deal, is Bobby V just a "bridge manager?"

It is interesting to note that John Farrell only has two years left on his deal with Toronto. The Red Sox would have liked to have gotten Farrell this fall, but the Jays said no. They installed a "no lateral movement" policy for their managerial staff, and then reportedly asked Boston for Clay Buchholz as compensation.

It's been said that Valentine was the owner's guy, while new general manager Ben Cherington wanted Dale Sveum. Maybe in the end, they all just wanted Farrell.

Now Valentine will take over a very good baseball team that had a very bad month last season. He will bring in a no-nonsense attitude and demand respect from the players.  With a two-year deal, he has incentive (and a short window) to go out and win now. If he can right the ship and get the Sox to the postseason, a place they have not seen in two years, he may get a contract extension out of it and make everyone forget about the name John Farrell.

Either way, the fun will start Thursday at 5:30 at Fenway Park.
