Menino Takes Steps Towards Removing ‘Occupy Boston’

BOSTON (CBS) – While the ‘Occupy’ camps have been taken down in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, there are no immediate plans to kick out the protestors in Dewey Square.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Carl Stevens reports

But Mayor Tom Menino says he wants to have the tools to remove them, if necessary.

He told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Wednesday that the city is taking steps to counter a temporary restraining order obtained by the protestors earlier this month.

WBZ-TV’s Paul Burton reports

“We filed papers with the courts yesterday to give explanation of why we think that injunction should be removed. It goes before the judge on December 1st to ask for removal of the court order,” he said.

In court papers, which recognize “Occupy Boston” as a website and not a legal entity, the city says conditions of the tent city are a threat to public safety:

“The encampment is a tightly clustered tinderbox which poses a substantial, worsening risk of uncontrollable fire… The city says the threat at the park is real … fire , police and inspectors conclude it poses an imminent threat of danger to the occupiers and those around it.”

Menino says if there is a problem, he plans to remove the protestors.

“So far, we’ve had a good relationship with the Dewey Square folks and we haven’t had any major problems like other cities and I want to continue that relationship, but there will be a time and place that we want to use some of the documentation we have.”

Those at Occupy Boston, though, are standing firm. Some told WBZ-TV that even if they get evicted, they plan to return.

WBZ-TV’s Diana Perez reports.

Attorneys for both sides will hash it out before a judge at a hearing on Thursday.

Boston Police said it has cost them $750,000 for overtime for Occupy Boston, as of November 28th.

The square is owned by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and the RKGC (Rose Kennedy Green way Conservancy) are the stewards responsible for it……

I’d say it’s appropriate for the stewards to start charging, ‘RENT’!

They’re ‘stewards’ of the parcel of land entrusted to them, so, $12.00 a night per tent, sounds fair, plus $3.00 for security, very reasonable!…That’s $15.00 a day per tent, single occupancy, $20.00 for double occupancy!

Starting on December 1st…..To be paid ‘bi-weekly’…..Each ‘tent’ will be assigned a ‘Room/Bivouac Number’….A one week security deposit will be required on or B/4 the 15th of December. That’s, $105 for a single & $140 for a double….No ‘Credit Cards accepted, because ‘credit & borrowing’ is the reason they’re there to begin with!…..

These prices are very reasonable given the room rates of the surrounding hotels….I’d say they’ll be saving anywhere between $125 to $225 a night!
    Move over ‘Coupon Suzie’!

Failure to pay ‘rent & security deposit’ will ‘trigger’ appropriate legal action & eviction….Right around ‘Christmas Day’….

It’s the Republicans who are bad-mouthing the “Occupy” movement, but it’s the Democrats who are evicting them. starting with Barrack Obama and his Homeland Security Department. Go figure!

    1. LLoyd Bridges says:

The democrats are only evicting them because they are COSTING the cities millions of taxpayer dollars, hurting small local business and tourism. Several revenue generating events have also had to be cancelled due to the Marxists camped out on Public Property. Public property belongs to the 100%, not just the selfish communists and anarchists.

      1. Anonymous says:

No, LLoyd. The Democrats are evicting the occupiers because they can’t co-opt the movement. The occupiers are upset about both the lefties and the righties selling the US down the river to the big banks. None of the tea partiers or occupiers want to live in the ‘United States of Goldman Sachs’ any longer….

        Mr. Annoying,

This is how we got to wear we are today:

After WW II, the US via the Marshall Plan, financed & rebuilt Europe….In doing so America placed a protective umbrella, through NATO, over those countries…

Consequently those countries ‘didn’t’ have to invest in standing armies to protect themselves. They were able to direct those defense funds to things like ‘socialized medicine’, free college tuition, 4-6 weeks vacation in certain industries & a ‘Litany’ of other hand outs….

        Creating a ‘gimmiecrat, entitled’ mindset.

Meanwhile back home, since the mid-sixties, the advent of Lyndon’s ‘Great Society’,which was unfunded, consequiently, the US has raised it’s debt limit 70+ times to pay for it….

It’s over, the $$’s ‘ALL GONE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD’, deal with it!….All financed, as an unintended consequence by the USA’s borrowing $$!

I find it interesting that China & India are now owning & kicking our butt’s….51 babies are born every minute in India, probably a lot more in China. Do you think they’ll build ‘welfare states’ or build their economy’s?…….Could their succes be because we ‘didn’t’ help them?……..’YUP’……They helped themselves!

        & so it goes.

        gramps……PS

Our ‘Great & now failing Society’ was funded by ‘CHINA’……Chicken fingers, anyone?

I don’t see why the BPD has needed to put officers on overtime in Dewey Square. There has been no increase in crime since the encampment has existed beyond what would normally be the case. Those who oversee the encampment do not allow any illegal activity (other than the civil disobedience of the camp’s existence), and maintain their own force of trusted camp residents who provide a 24-hour watch over the camp. Every time I’ve been down to the encampment I’ve seen the BPD just standing around, but I’ve never seen them have to react to any incident within the camp itself. The famous case of drug-dealing took place outside the camp, where it would be taking place in a city the size of Boston with our without an encampment. In short, it is my belief that the BPD continues to spend money on completely unnecessary overtime simply so that they have a financial justification to remove the encampment.

” … justification to remove the encampment.”

… and to provide their fellow police officers with lots of overtime pay. Brilliant, isn’t it?
Two birds with one stone: Anti #Occupy propaganda and extra pay in time for the holidays.
Paid for by we, the people.
