BOSTON (AP) — The MBTA says riders are continuing to use the Boston-area transit system in record numbers.

The T says October ridership rose 3.2 percent compared with the same month a year ago, with an average of just under 1.35 million passenger trips each weekday.

Officials also announced Wednesday that ridership for the months of September and October combined was the highest for any two-month period in the system’s history.

Acting MBTA general manager Jonathan Davis cites the improving economy in Massachusetts as the major reason for increased ridership. But he also says cell phone applications and other real-time tools for getting the latest bus and subway information have made it more convenient for many people to use the T.
