Bail Not Lowered For Man Accused Of Watching Child Porn On Plane To Logan

BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts judge has declined to reduce the $75,000 bail for a University of Utah professor charged with viewing child pornography on a flight to Boston.

Prosecutors on Wednesday argued that Grant Smith could face additional charges because he told investigators that he traded images of teens online, a crime punishable in Massachusetts by a minimum of 10 years and up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors also argued that the Cottonwood Heights, Utah, resident could flee because he has no ties to Massachusetts.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge rejected Smith's petition, saying he could seek another bail review in the future.

Prosecutors say a fellow first-class passenger saw Smith viewing the images Saturday and took a cellphone photo before alerting a flight attendant.

The 47-year-old pleaded not guilty Monday.
