Gresh & Zo: Recchi On The Cup Win & Thoughts On This Year’s Team

The Bruins are on a six game win streak after getting off to a slow start.

Former Boston Bruins winger and three-time Stanley Cup Champion Mark Recchi joined Gresh & Zo in studio to talk about the Cup win, his plans for the future and what he thinks of the Bruins this year.

It had been 39 years since the Cup came to Boston, and the city celebrated with a huge parade through the streets. Had Recchi ever seen a city react to a Stanley Cup win like that before?

“I can’t compare it to anything. It was incredible, just the support throughout the years I was here, the two and a half years, it was amazing to start with and then to be able to win it and see the reaction,” Recchi said.

At what point during the run last year did Recchi think they could or we are going to win?

“At the start of the playoffs I really thought we had an unbelievable opportunity, and when we got through Philadelphia as easily as we did I knew we were right there,” said Recchi. “I had a great feeling we were going to the Finals and figured it was going to be Vancouver and I had no problems. We played Vancouver late in the season and it was a good game, but I had no doubts that if it came down to a seven game series, we would the team that would be the champion.”

“In 22 years they are the most arrogant team I played against and the most hated team I’ve ever played against,” Recchi said of the Canucks. “I couldn’t believe their antics; they’re falling and diving. It was very frustrating, but at the same time as the series wore on we knew we were getting to them and we knew our physical play and our skating, I think it caught them off guard a little bit.”

When this team started off to the bad start going 3-7 in the first month of the season people started to blame the Stanley Cup hangover. Having played two seasons after winning the Cup, Recchi explains what it’s like to play that season after winning a championship.

“My first one it was tough…There was definitely a hangover. Like you said you’re young, the Bruins had a lot of young guys and hey, it’s to be expected. In ’06 I found it a lot easier, how to get ready and how to prepare and making sure I was ready for the season. But these guys have done a wonderful job,” the former Bruin said.

Recchi is a classless hoser from Kamloops.

Pardon me, you are calling Mark Recchi classless? That’s Mark Recchi, right? Are you on drugs? Oh wait, your probably from Vancouver, of course you’re on drugs…Mark Recchi, of ALL the players in the NHL is probably THE MOST classy individual I have ever seen. Come on now, the Canucks lost, get over it! You know what would be interesting would be IF they got there again and faced the Bruins…notice I said “if”. It’s not likely the Canucks will see another final anytime soon. he Bruins however, they just might. Wouldn’t that be awesome!

There are a lot of typos in this article… just say’in.

Seriously, there’s really no need to trash the Canucks. Every team “react” a little more to draw penalties. The Bruins are rough, and that’s hockey, but look how many calls the refs missed in the series. Anyways, there’s just no place in being classless. Recchi’s comments are blatant attack on the entire organization and their fans. It’s inexcusable.

    Go Canucks Go!

    Dear Canuck fans,

There are simply no words that speak more clearly (and loudly) about the Canucks than their performance in last year’s Cup finals.

    Deal with it.

22 years of NHL experience, over 1000 NHL points and 3 Cup rings….who the hell does Mark Recchi think he is speaking on last years SCF?!

  • Scott mac millan

Recchi is a hockey God, hats off to you and thanks for a tremendous career, glad to see you go out as a bruin. Go Boston !

  • Chris

    Hmmm, Interesting.
I am a huge Canuck fan and am still getting over the finals. Although I respect Recchi for all he has done in his career, however I don’t like these comments and I don’t see where they are coming from. It been 5 months since the finals and he feels he needs to rip on a team that he beat? You won, why go back and kick and spit on someone who is down? I have no idea where he gets the term arrogant from, I would say the Bruins showed more arrogance by Marchand punching Sedin in the face 6 times and telling people the reason he did it was he felt like it, Thomas crosschecking Sedin in the crease (I still am trying to figure out how goalies are allowed to do this or if it was just Thomas), Boychuck riding Raymond into the boards and breaking his back without a text or call seeing if he was alright, and Horton complaining that all he got from Rome was a text and not a call? The Canucks never said anything negative about the Bruins and complemented them on the Cup victory. Where is the arrogance?

Really Mark ???? Five months after game seven and you are still whining . Is this what they teach you down there ? I don’t see any other teams blackballing the Bruins for the way you played ( and it wasn’t pretty either ) If there is any arrogance it is the comments from some Bruins and their fans . I find it amusing that you all think that it was only the Canucks that played dirty etc and that Boston played so clean . Still can’t and won’t ever agree with that . Just take a look at the hit on Miller … still have the NHL in your pockets this year?

    • Chris

I agree with you. I don’t get where this hatred of the Canucks is coming from from all the other teams saying we dive and embellish, all other teams do it, i don’t know why the Canucks are singled out as the only team. Boston was the darlings of the finals and could do no wrong, no matter that they did. I really like Gillis’ comments after the series when asked what he needs to change to get back to the final. He stated that since the lockout, the league wanted to crack down on clutching, grabbing, dirty plays and wanted to move towards a fast paced skilled finesse game. And that’s how the Canucks built their team. However, this year, for some reason, once the finals hit, the league decided that it would alright for the game to be dragged into the gutter and into the alley. And then on top of it you get Recchi shooting his mouth off about how arrogant the Canucks are? kinda hypocritical don’t ya think?
