Commonly referred to as Lou Gherig's Disease, ALS "is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles," according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Sen. Scott Brown was on hand for the walk in honor of a college friend who has the disease.

"Massachusetts is No. 2 in the country in getting the funding that can help with the breakthroughs that are, in fact, happening to try to get a handle on this devastating disease," said Sen. Brown.

"So, I just want to thank you all for coming here and for what you're doing," Brown added.
