FAIRHAVEN (CBS) – A driver has surrendered to police after she hit a couple in a crosswalk, killing a woman.

29-year-old Katie Brienzo and her boyfriend, 38-year-old Ellery Reynolds, were crossing Sconticut Neck Road at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they were hit, right in front of her family. They were heading to Brienzo’s sister’s house before the accident.

Brienzo was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she died.

Reynolds is now in fair condition at a hospital in Boston.

The driver, 35-year old Renee Andrews of Fairhaven, turned herself into police.

She will be summonsed to court where she will be charged with motor vehicle homicide and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

“Katie was very special, very full of life, she enjoyed life. She’s going to be very missed,” her brother-in-law John Fitzgerald told WBZ-TV Wednesday.

“It’s just sad, just really, really sad. It’s going to touch a lot of people, because she did,” Brienzo’s friend Michelle Hartley said.

WBZ-TV’s Alana Gomez reports

Neighbors say the street is notorious for speeding and more should be done to protect pedestrians.

“There should be a policeman here to park somewhere and see these zoomers go by like they do,” resident Beverly Rock said.

So was this a “hit and run” case? Did the driver flee the scene?

Again, another incredibly sad story. This death did not have to happen; slow down people. Think of others before you speed into the night or become a distracted driver of any sort. My thoughts go out to Ms. Brienzo’s boyfriend and family.

the week before this all happened i was making a left turn to get home down the neck and as i was about to turn i looked out my side veiw mirror and a black pick-up truck was passing me on my left. If i had not noticed this he would have wiped me out completly! police need to take more action to speeder and careless drivers esspecially after the tragic acedent that happened tuesday night, because of careless drivers it took such a young womens life from her and severely injured her loved one (boyfirend) our thoughts and preyers are with kaites family and the young man and his family…god bless<3
