Julian Edelman Arrested For Allegedly Groping Woman At Boston Bar

BOSTON (CBS) - Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was arrested Tuesday morning for indecent assault and battery.

The 25-year-old Edelman was arrested after 1:30 a.m. on Exeter Street for allegedly groping a woman at Storyville, a Copley Square restaurant, police said.

According to the Boston police report, Edelman was at the bar celebrating Halloween when he allegedly reached under a woman's costume dress and grabbed her between the legs on the dance floor at the club.

WBZ-TV's Karen Anderson reports.

A witness at the scene told police that he watched as the alleged victim's face changed to an "expression of shock" at the time of the assault, the report said.

The club manager told police he was notified of "an altercation on the dance floor" and saw the witness threatening to beat up Edelman and the alleged victim trying to calm him down. The manager said that it's club policy to eject anyone involved in an altercation, and that the witness was thrown out first because he was "being most aggressive."

The witness and alleged victim met police outside the club, and shortly thereafter, officers arrested Edelman, who denied the allegation, according to the police report.

At Edelman's arraignment on Tuesday, the judge ordered the wideout to stay away from alleged victim and witness, as well as the nightclub. He was released without monetary bail.

He is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 10, 2012.

The Patriots released the following statement on Edelman's arrest:

"The Patriots are aware of the reports involving Julian Edelman and will defer any comment to his representatives at this time."

Bill Belichick, speaking during a conference call on Tuesday, echoed the Patriots' statement:

"I think just what the statement says. I don't think we have enough information to comment on that right now."

On his way out of court, Edelman did not speak to reporters. He did stop to sign an autograph outside the courthouse.

His agent Don Yee said in a statement "the charges will be vigorously fought within the court system, instead of a rush to judgment elsewhere."
