HAVERHILL (CBS) – The Hunking Middle school in Haverhill is falling apart and mold has been discovered in the building.

It’s been a crazy first year of middle school for sixth graders at Hunking. The entire class has been moved to another school since theirs is, quite literally, falling apart.

Hunking’s problems run deep.

WBZ-TV’s Jim Armstrong reports

From cracked foundation columns and floors and a roof in danger of collapse, to long-standing mold and ventilation problems. They are so bad that experts suggest the windows stay open year-round.

Parents say City Hall and school administrators only just started listening after a group of moms came together to form a group called Haverhill Parents Saving our Schools.

Seventh and eighth grade classes are still being held there as engineers try to figure out what is smarter and cheaper; fixing the building, or tearing the whole thing down.

Why does it take so long to decide that the school has problems? I attended Hunking from 1994-1997 and even then the school was falling appart. Everytime it rained we played dodge the buckets in hallways and classrooms. They need to tear it down and start over. It is beyond the point of repair at this point.

More than half of all schools in this state are leaking air, water , fumes, have crumbling mortar with bricks falling all around them , mold hidden and visible, odors they cant find the source for, cramped rooms and little or no money to do anything for the school, its students and facility, Why cant this state get off their hynies and realize our children our the future,, What will it take to fix the problem a school collapse,, I pray that never happens,

Thank you for your supportive comments, we need all the help we can get up here. It’s been an ongoing problem for many years. so so sad. I really wish the Governors Office would get involved at this point. I do feel like we are treading water at this point.
