Officials said the gun was found in a backpack of a student at the Media Technology High School on the West Roxbury Education Complex campus on VFW Parkway.

The firearm was a Smith & Wesson .38 loaded with five rounds of ammunition.

There are metal detectors at the main entrance, but the student with the gun entered through a side door, officials said.  They added that he was let in by another student to try to evade the metal detectors.

School officials were notified quickly and found him in a bathroom by the side entrance.

The juvenile is being held without bail after prosecutors moved for a dangerousness hearing.

The school is the former West Roxbury High School.
