Red Sox Schedule Tuesday Press Conference To Introduce Cherington

BOSTON (CBS) - It is a move that has been expected for nearly two weeks, but the Red Sox will officially announce Ben Cherington as their new general manager on Tuesday.

The Red Sox have scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. on Tuesday to make the announcement.

Cherington takes over for Theo Epstein, who will be officially introduced as president of the Chicago Cubs at a noon press conference in Chicago.

Cherington will also get the title of executive vice president of the Red Sox.

The 37-year-old Cherington has some experience as general manager. Along with Jed Hoyer (who is expected to join Epstein as the the Cubs general manager in Chicago), Cherington took over in 2005 as Co-GMs of the Red Sox when Epstein walked away from the team briefly. The two held the position for 80 days until Epstein returned.

Cherington has been in charge of scouting and player development, consulting Epstein on every major league transaction, for the past two years. He was hired by the Red Sox in 1999, and was named Assistant Director of Player Development in 2002.

Epstein leaves after running the Red Sox for 10 years, leading Boston to two World Series titles and six trips to the postseason. The Cubs and Red Sox are still working on compensation for Epstein, who had one year remaining on his deal with Boston.
