Mass. Lawmakers To Weigh Bills To Make Sports Safer

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts lawmakers are weighing a series of bills designed to improve safety in school sports.

One of the bills slated to come up before the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Health on Tuesday would require the state Department of Public Health to conduct a comprehensive study of oral injuries in school sports among elementary, middle and high school children.

Its goal would be to come up with ways to reduce oral injuries, including the mandatory use of protective mouth gear.

A second bill would establish a Sports Injury Commission to investigate and report on the incidence of sports injuries in schools.

A third bill would require that all coaches of interscholastic sports pass the requirements of a CPR training course and possess a valid certificate.
