2,000 Pounds Of Copper Wire Stolen In Whitman

WHITMAN, Mass. (AP) -- Police in Whitman are investigating the theft of 1,000 feet of copper wire from a construction site at the National Grid transformer relay station in town.

The theft was reported by company officials on Tuesday.

Police say the copper wire weighed at least 2,000 pounds and is worth about $1 a pound as scrap.

Chief Christine-May Stafford tells The Enterprise police are reviewing footage from a surveillance camera.

Police say there were no signs of forced entry into the area that was protected by a chain-link fence and key lock.
