Brockton Among Cities Recognized For Dedication To Kids, Community

BROCKTON (CBS) - For their dedication to kids, schools and community, five Massachusetts cities showed up on a list of 100 nationwide to win awards for their efforts.

While the winners have a lot to offer, they may not be the first to come to mind.

Brockton, Fall River, Bedford, Cambridge, And Somerville were among the winners in Massachusetts.

The award by America's Promise Alliance is based on how well the communities engage kids, working to keep them in school, and out of trouble. The cities do not have to be perfect and in fact are often home to at-risk youth.

Colleen Wilber, a spokeswoman for the Alliance says the awards aren't based on the community's circumstances, but its efforts.

The alliance looks at criteria like how communities engage businesses, faith based agencies, and the kids themselves.
