With McCourty Leading Way, Belichick Hopes For Better Tackling

BOSTON (CBS) – The defense of the New England Patriots is giving up some big yards, and in the process, has a very unconventional leader in tackles.

With 32 tackles entering Sunday's game against the Jets, corner Devin McCourty leads the team. His 27 total tackles is more than any other Patriot's total tackles.

This is something head coach Bill Belchick would like to see change.

"I don't know if that is good or bad to have our corner as the leading tackler," Belichick told Gino Cappalletti on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Patriots Pregame Show. "Devin is a good tackler and a very good player for us. He is excellent as a run-force corner, those are not easy to find. Not a lot of guys will do that and he does it very well."

"We're fortunate to have him; hopefully we can make a few tackles before they get out to the corner position," said Belichick.

"You usually like to see your linebackers make the majority of the tackles, then your safeties," noted the Patriots coach. "Everyone should chip in with a few."

Injured linebacker Jerod Mayo is second on the team with 24 tackles. Kyle Arrington, another corner, is third with 22.
