Report: Terry Francona Plans To Manage In 2012

BOSTON (CBS) - Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona plans to manage again in 2012 if the opportunity presents itself, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

The only current managerial opening (other than in Boston) is with the Chicago White Sox, a team Francona has ties to. He managed in the White Sox minor league system during the 90's.

The Red Sox announced Friday they would not pick up the two-year option on Francona's contract after the team stumbled in September, blowing a nine-game lead in less than a month. The Sox finished just 7-20 in September and 90-72 overall, just one game behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the Wild Card.

Olney also reported that the Red Sox are interested in interviewing Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, who has served as interim manager for the Reds and Pirates but has never held a full-time managing gig.
