Massport To Help Pay For New Energy-Efficient Trucks

BOSTON (AP) -- The Massachusetts Port Authority is helping owners of old trucks buy newer, environmentally friendly vehicles.

Massport, the state agency that runs public terminals in the Port of Boston, announced Monday it will pay 50 percent, up to $25,000, for new trucks to service its Conley Container Terminal in South Boston.

The agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has provided a $500,000 grant to help pay for the program, expect up to 60 old trucks will be replaced with trucks meeting or exceeding 2007 emission requirements.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

Massport says older trucks are the main source of the port's air emissions.

Truck owners wishing to participate in the $1.5 million program must scrap their old truck's engine and agree to use the upgraded truck to regularly haul containers to and from Conley.
