Man Survives Fall Onto Red Line Tracks After Hemp Fest

BOSTON (CBS) – A young man survived a frightening fall in front of a subway train over the weekend.

Nineteen-year-old Richard Morrow of Brockton was standing on a crowded platform at the Park Street Red Line station around 6 p.m. Saturday when he suddenly fell into the pit.

A train was pulling into the station at the time, but the driver was able to come to a complete stop before reaching the man on the tracks.

"I got the train's attention to stop short," said MBTA inspector Roberto Russell, who helped pull Morrow out of the pit.

Reporter Christina Hager reports

Morrow "brushed" the electrified third rail, according to an MBTA report. He was not seriously hurt.

"All he had to do was just reach out like probably less than five inches in front of him and he would have hit the third rail and he would have been electrocuted," said Russell.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports.

Morrow was taken to Tufts Medical Center, where he was treated for a minor cut to the back of his head.

According to the MBTA police report, the man told officers, "I don't really know what happen(ed). I think I tripped and the next thing I knew I was in the pit with a train coming towards me."

"I had come from the Hemp Fest but had only smoked a little bit of weed."

Ricky Morrow's mother, Debbie Morrow, tells WBZ he was not high or drunk, but that he got jostled in the crowd on the platform, and fell. She says he went to the event to see a concert there.

"He has two little cuts," she says. "He went to the hospital and they checked him out and made sure he was all right and he was fine."

"He was fine. He didn't look like he was high or anything like that."

WBZ-TV's Christina Hager contributed to this report.
