Red Sox Gonzalez Leaves With Tight Left Calf After Homer

BOSTON (CBS) - As if things were not going bad enough for the Boston Red Sox, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez had to leave their 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays.

Gonzalez was taken out prior to the seventh inning with tightness in his left calf. He hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, his 26th of the season, giving Boston a 4-2 lead at the time.

After the blast, it appeared Gonzalez was running around the bases slowly. He said he originally tweaked the calf in the third inning on a ground out.

The calf tightened up on me pretty good, hopefully I come in tomorrow and feel good," said Gonzalez after the game. " I came in after that inning on defense and told them my calf was pretty tight... When I rounded the bases it got worse. They didn't want me to keep going out there and making it worse; better safe than sorry I guess."

"He wanted to stay in, but as the inning progressed he got tight," manager Terry Francona said after the game. "I hope he plays tomorrow, but I don't think this is anything that lingers."

Gonzalez said he would consider DHing Thursday if it means he will be in the lineup.

The Red Sox were also without designated hitter David Ortiz for the second straight game, as he deals with back spasms.
