WBZ’s Radio Sewing School And Women’s Journal

Radio sewing school – that’s right. Sewing on the radio.  During World War II, you could learn to sew, in thirteen easy lessons on WBZ. Even though it was ‘sight unseen’ sewing, listeners could follow along from 9:15 to 9:30 on each Tuesday. We mailed you a free leaflet, radio host Mrs. Esther Cooley Page helped you follow along. There were two courses: “make a coat” and “sewing time savers.” If sewing wasn’t your cup of tea, perhaps you enjoyed Mrs. Leslie Galbraith’s reports; the talented stage actress was also Editor of the WBZ Radio Women’s Journal. WBZ had a popular women’s show starring Mildred Carlson. She provided housewives with recipes and household tips on her “Home Forum” program.
