WBZ’s Joe Green Helicopter Rescue

Millions rely on WBZ to find out what’s happening in the news. One afternoon in 1976, WBZ became the news. Veteran traffic reporter Joe Green performed an amazing rescue with the ‘BZ Copter. It all started when a college student was kayaking on the Merrimack River; but the kayak overturned in the chilly waters, leaving the young man stranded on a rock. The nearest rescue helicopter was on Cape Cod, so WBZ’s Joe Green was asked to assist. Green flew the ‘BZ Copter to Lowell, located the young man, and carefully eased the copter down. The student was cold and suffered some bruises, but otherwise, he was fine, thanks in large part to the heroic actions of WBZ’s Joe Green.
