Infant Found Dead In School Van In Dorchester

BOSTON (CBS) - An infant was found dead in a school van in Boston on Monday.

Boston police say the child was 13 months old.

The van was parked in front of Gloria Luna's Family Daycare on Floyd Street in Dorchester. Police say the van is registered to a transportation company owned by the daycare owner's husband.

Officers have blocked off the road, which is just off of Blue Hill Avenue and were seen removing several children from the daycare.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis says he doesn't know how long the baby was left in the van, but it was likely most of the day.

Neighbor Caridad Dominguez saw the van driver visibly upset after the discovery.

"He was having a commotion, like he was throwing up, hitting himself and getting very sick."

The baby was not enrolled at Gloria Luna's but was in the van to be dropped off at a different facility. The van driver has a contract with Associated Daycare and drops children at several different sites.

Inspectional Services cited the daycare for having 13 children on the premises when it is only licensed to care for 10.

They also cited the owners for not having working fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, or emergency lights in the daycare.

The daycare was closed Monday night due to the violations and inspectors began boarding up the building.

According to the Commissioner of Early Education and Care, the daycare has only had minor complaints in the past.

Dr. Sherri Killins also says that attendance is supposed to be taken at the beginning and end of every trip on the van.

Killins says the EEC and DCF are cooperating with the Boston Police investigation.
