RI Rock-Eating Dog Nominated For Strangest Pet Insurance Claim

LINCOLN, R.I. (AP) -- A Rhode Island dog is in the running for an insurance prize after eating about 100 rocks.

Owner Lori Laverdiere says she's happy that she purchased health insurance for her pug, Harley.

Laverdiere tells WPRI-TV  she used the policy recently after an X-Ray showed her dog had eaten about 100 small stones. The rocks came out without surgery and Harley has since recovered.

The insurance company, VPI Pet Insurance, has nominated Harley for its "Hambone Award," which is given to the most unusual pet health insurance claim of the year.

Harley's competition includes a Chihuahua from Illinois who survived being picked up by a great horned owl that was looking for a meal.
