The Bear Essentials: Lucic Plays 'You Know Who I Am Card?' Really?
BOSTON (CBS) - I'm not concerned about the alleged physical altercation between Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic and his girlfriend. Truth is, I don't think he would hit his girlfriend. It just doesn't make any sense, drunk or not. What I am concerned about is the comment he made to the police after the incident.
On Tuesday morning, around 1:30 am, Lucic and his girlfriend got into an argument regarding her lack of footwear. Apparently, she stepped out of a cab onto the North End streets without any shoes on and for some reason this angered Lucic to no end. One thing led to another, and all of a sudden the girl was on the ground and the 6-foot-4, 220 pound hockey player was towering over her.
When Boston Police showed up at his house, the intoxicated Lucic wasn't exactly thrilled. "We had an argument. We're fine. Why are you here at my house?" he asked police. This next part gets good. He proceeded to throw his cell phone to the ground and utter the famous phrase "Do you know who I am!?!"

I have to admit, I felt a bit nauseous when I read this. Quite uncomfortable actually. The Jersey Shore cast popped into my mind, kids wearing glasses with no lenses, ego-maniacs, and the list goes on. I can picture a lot of jackasses saying those words, but Milan Lucic? The charity event holding, Christmas gift giving, fan-respected Milan Lucic? It just doesn't sound right.
Does it?
I understand that the public image is a bit forced. We all know that in reality Lucic is the 23 year-old Stanley Cup having, 30-goal scoring Boston Bruin celebrity. He has an ego; got it.
But still, "Do you know who I am?"
The egotistic, self-important, narcissism automatically made me shake my head. I want to like my athletes. I want to put up a poster of them in my room, even if they're not the best player. As long they come across as down to earth individuals, they're OK in my book.
"Do you know who I am?" does not seem down to earth.

Following the incident, Milan's marketing rep, Cleon Daskalakis, stated that the comment was taken out of context and what he meant by it was, "Do you know who I am? I would never do something like that." He went on to say that, "If anything, he lacks the idea that he's special or gifted."
I don't buy it. I think that somewhere in Lucic's make-up there may be a "jackass element" creeping around. I may be wrong. I actually hope I am.
I suppose that a free pass is warranted for a "first time ego offense." I just hope that the Stanley Cup isn't getting to his head.
