Pedstrian Charged With Attacking Driver With Cane Over Crosswalk Dispute

BOSTON (CBS) - Danvers police are investigating an apparent case of road rage. But it's not a driver accused of being the aggressor, it's a pedestrian.

Police say the pedestrian was at a cross-walk out-side the Liberty Tree Mall and became angry when a driver didn't stop more quickly to let him pass.

Police say the man on foot, later identified as George White, apparently took matters into his own hands, using his cane to strike the driver's car and then the driver.

"He had blood all over his face," Danvers police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said of the driver. "He stated that he had an altercation with another gentleman."

White, who's also charged in another assault in Lynn, initially claimed the driver bumped him with the car.

Police say witnesses dispute his account.

He has pleaded not guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60 years of age, and will remain behind bars until his next court appearance at the end of September.
