Lynn Superintendent Worries Teachers Will Become Targets On Facebook
LYNN (CBS) - Lynn public schools is ready to debate a difficult issue: How to prevent teachers from befriending students on Facebook.
They view such contact as unprofessional but it's not an easy issue.
The state's Association of Superintendents issued guidelines for teachers and social media. One of them is not being online friends with students. Lynn Superintendent Catherine Latham knows teachers must build a rapport with students.

But Latham is concerned about inappropriate contact or even innocent contact being misconstrued.
She worries about teachers writing things that get interpreted as district policy. She also worries about teachers becoming targets.
"Innocently they put some information about themselves online and who knows what a student, a parent is going to do with that information."
Latham admits it's almost impossible to prevent such online contact but they can warn teachers ahead of time.
