Keller @ Large: Summer Fails To Live Up To Promise

BOSTON (CBS) - Summer is supposed to be a carefree time when all the stresses of the winter months – the horrible weather, the cabin fever, the atrocious Boston drivers – melt away as the living turns easy.

For me at least, and maybe for you also, that's the expectation formed in the depths of February.

But looking back on it, the summer of 2011 hasn't really delivered on that promise.

The perfect summer weather of the last few days has served as a reminder of how truly awful much of the weather has been, from the tornadoes to the sweltering heat to whatever it was that knocked out the power last weekend.

The news hasn't gotten any better – between our economic doldrums and the spectacular ineptitude of the political elites, it's been a bad news summer from start to finish.

And on top of it all, the Sox still can't seem to shake the Yankees.

I don't know about you, but I need some help decompressing over this last long weekend of the summer.

So let's go to the movie listings and see if Hollywood can help.

One thing's for sure, I don't want any reminders of Irene.

So I won't be going to see "The Tree of Life," for obvious reasons.

"Don't be Afraid of the Dark" is out, too.

And if you are one of the thousands of unfortunate souls still without electricity today, I doubt you're up for taking in "The Help."

Talk about a coming attraction that never came.

I also have zero interest in seeing any movie that might remind me of Washington, D.C., however inadvertently.

So I'm sorry, but I won't be shelling out nine bucks to see "The Debt," or using my debit card, either.

While I suspect it's a comedy, something tells me "Horrible Bosses" will also hit too close to home.

And frankly, if I want to watch "The Smurfs in 3D," I'll save my dough and turn on the president's address to Congress next week, or whenever they schedule it.

No, Hollywood is not working for me this weekend, although I see they have made a movie about Red Sox fans: "Crazy, Stupid Love."
