Woman Rescued In RI After Being Swept Off Rocks

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) - The Coast Guard has rescued a woman who was swept from the rocks at a beach in Narragansett.

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the woman from the water about 500 yards off Narragansett Beach at around 3:30 a.m. Monday. Authorities said a man also was swept into the water but he was able to swim ashore.

Narragansett Police notified the Coast Guard around 2 a.m. Coast Guard spokesman Ronny German said a police officer who responded to the scene threw the woman a life jacket when she was about 30 yards offshore.

She was taken to the hospital after being rescued. No information was immediately available on her condition.

Officials said there were strong winds and waves were between 7 and 10 feet.
